History and Background
“Chandi” is the goddess of power and “garh” means fortress. The creator of the city was the Swiss-French architect Charles Edouard Jeanneret (Le Corbusier). The site was selected by Dr. M.S. Randhawa, the first Deputy Commissioner of Ambala. Chandigarh is reputed as it stands to be the capital of both Punjab and Haryana and it also enjoys the rights of a Union Territory. Chandigarh which covers an area of 114.59 sq. km, lies at the foot of Shivalik hills.
