Delhi, the capital of India, is divided into two parts, Old Delhi and New Delhi. Old Delhi includes various places of tourist attraction where one can see mosques, forts and other monuments depicting the Mughal background. The important places to see here are the Red Fort or Lal Quila made out of red sandstone, the Jama Masjid, the Raj Ghat or the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi, Shanti Vana - the memorial of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Chandni Chowk, a busy wholesale market place.
New Delhi is a modern city designed by Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker. It has several government buildings and embassies apart from the historical monuments. The Rashtrapati Bhawan was once the residence of the British rulers and presently is the official residence of the President of India. India Gate is an impressive archway with the names of the Indian Army soldiers who laid down their lives during the WWI. The Laxminarayan Temple is built by the Birlas and is dedicated to Lord Krishna. The Purana Quila was built by Emperor Humayun and presently houses the Delhi Zoo. The Humayun’s Tomb is a mausoleum built in Humayun’s memory by his wife. Qutub Minar is a brick minaret built by Qutub ud din Aibak. The lotus temple is a lotus shaped Bahai temple in white marble.
Delhi has a number of museums which display antique artifacts. The boutiques and shopping arcades offer several handicrafts both traditional and contemporary which people like to see and purchase. The National Rail Museum is an interesting place with many models of trains and a large collection of old locomotives. Delhi has numerous other places of tourist interest.
