History and Background

Himachal Pradesh came into existence during the ancient period of 2250 to 1750 B.C. This northern mountainous part of India was inhabited with the tribes that included Kirats, Kinnars, Khasas, Dasa and Koilis. The small empire of Himachal Pradesh was independent till the time when Muslims entered into Northern India. The states of the Himachali kingdom were destroyed by the Muslim intruders many times. At the beginning of 10th century, Kangra was conquered by Afghani Muslim emperor, Mohammed Ghaznavi. The battles in the states started after this period.

Later in 1768, the Nepali martial tribe, Gorkhas expanded their military power into Himachal Pradesh. In the 18th century, the British powers started clawing into the state. The British territories gathered at Himachal Pradesh after 1858. The rulers of these hilly regions . remained faithful to the British rulers. They provided material and men to the British Army during wars. After independence of India in 1947, Himachal Pradesh became the state of India on 26th January 1950.
