Since Himachal Pradesh is a mountainous area, the transportation by road is most commonly preferred by the local residents and tourists. All the places in Himachal Pradesh are well connected with each other by road. The system of road transportation is better that railways and airways.
Tourists can travel by ordinary, semi deluxe or regular deluxe buses in Himachal Pradesh. Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) has provided well maintained transportation facilities for the tourists. These are inclusive of the luxury coaches, which operate within and also outside the state.
Around 8 national highways (NH) of total length 1235 km. pass through Himachal Pradesh. NH-1A connects with the city Shahpur. NH 20 connects places like Mandi, Dharamshala and Pathankot. NH 21 connects with Manali and Mandi. Other major places such as Shimla, Ambala and Kangra are also connected through state highways.
Himachal Pradesh is one of the frequently visited tourist destinations in India. Despite of being a hilly state, the road density is quite high in Himachal Pradesh. The Hamirpur district in this state possesses highest density of roads in India.
