History and Background
According to mythology, the great sage Kashyap drained a lake and later the Brahmins inhabited the area, this area was then called as Kashmir. In the 2nd century, Buddhism flourished under the rule of Kushan. Hinduism is practiced by a large number of people residing in the State.
The first Muslim to reign in Kashmir was Shamsuddin who replaced the last Hindu king Udiana Deva in the year 1346. In the year 1586, Kashmir was conquered by Mughal Emperor Akbar and then onwards Kashmir became a part of his massive empire. In the year 1846, British came into power after defeating Ranjit Singh who ruled the region since 1819. Later, Gulab Singh of Jammu became the king of Jammu and Kashmir
After the Independence, the region of Jammu & Kashmir became a part of Indian Territory and an integral region which contributed its glorious past to preserve the integrity and unity of India.
