Jammu & Kashmir has three airports at Jammu, Srinagar and Leh. Jammu and Leh have domestic airports, while Srinagar has the international airport. Jammu airport is famously known as Satwari airport and is connected to several destinations in India.
Several domestic airlines such as Air Deccan, Jet Airways and Indian Airlines are being scheduled for flights to Jammu and Kashmir. However, the Leh airport or the Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh is currently the highest commercial airport in the world as it is situated at an altitude of about 3000 meters (10682 feet). Domestic flights like Indian Airlines, Air Deccan and Jet Airways are the major airlines, which are connected to some of the major cities of India. Due to the presence of mountain winds, all the flights land and take off only in the mornings.
Sheikh Ul Alam International Airport is situated in Srinagar, the capital city of Jammu & Kashmir. Some of the flights operating from this airport are Air Deccan, Spice jet, Go Air, Jetlite, Kingfisher Airlines and Indian Airlines.. The international airport is just 14 kms away from the main city of Srinagar. There are daily flights to Srinagar which operate from Delhi, Jammu, Mumbai and other parts of India. This airport also possesses several large hangers and bunkers that were built by a semi-government agency.
