History and Background
Karnataka, formerly known as Mysore is the southern state of India and is bordered by Goa and Maharashtra on the north, Tamilnadu and Kerala to the south, Andra Pradesh to the east and Arabian Sea to the west. The inhabitants of Karnataka knew the use of iron and iron weapons which dates back to the 1200 BC. These old pieces can still be found in the Hallur and Dharwad district.
The earlier rulers of Karnataka were mainly from the Northern part of India. The Shathavahanas ruled mostly the Northern region of Karnataka from the 30 BC to the 230 AD. Then was the Kadamba Dynasty which was founded in the 345 AD by Mayurasharman. After the rule of Kadambas, it was the Gangas, the Badami Chalukyas, the Rashtrakutas, the Kalyana Chalukyas, the Sevunas or Yadavas, the Hoyasalas and the Vijayanagara Empire who invaded the state.
In the year 1763, Mughal Emperor Haidar Ali invaded Karnataka and merged it as the Keladi Kingdom. However in the year 1799, British overthrew his dynasty and ruled the state. Karnataka became an independent state in the year 1956, and then on 1st November 1973, it was named Karnataka.
