History and Background
According to the age-old myth, Kathmandu was a large lake. When it dried out, the land was known as Kathmandu valley. The most ancient known inscription in Kathmandu dates back to 185 AD. The oldest building in Kathmandu valley is 1992 years old.
However, the four “stupas” or pillars in the city are believed to have been raised in 3rd century BC, by Charumati. She was the daughter of the Mauryan king, Ashoka the Great. The Kathmandu valley exhibits the stories of visit by Buddha. There are firm evidences available in Kathmandu to reaffirm the tales.
The “Kirats” were the first rulers of Kathmandu. Later in 464 AD, the Kathmandu valley was ruled by Licchavi Dynasty. The Licchavi Dynasty was closely related with the Gupta Dynasty from India. The valley was ruled by Malla Dynasty from 12th century to 17th century. Later it was conquered by Prithvi Narayan Shah of Shah Dynasty. He created the present day Modern Nepal. Kathmandu comprises of the royal palace, corporate houses, embassies and government offices.
Kathmandu valley is declared as the UNESCO World Heritage Site, since it comprises of seven monuments.
