Getting around by road |
|
| |
The most convenient way to travel within the Kathmandu city and other places in Nepal is by road. The Kathmandu valley and other places are well connected by road. Tourists can walk around the city or hire a bike or auto- rickshaw. Walking may not be a pleasant experience at all places in the valley. Preferably the bike, auto- rickshaw or a taxi is most comfortable.
Traveling by bus is a cheaper option. However, the government travel buses are usually over crowded, making the journey uncomfortable. The tourists can rather opt for the tempos, which are the larger auto- rickshaws as they facilitate speedy transit. These tempos ride on the same route as that of buses, and charge same fares.
The taxis charge higher, yet reasonable fares. The taxi drivers in Kathmandu usually avoid using the meter. However, if forced, they will surely use the meters. At the popular tourist spots and around Thamel, the taxi drivers may ask for greater fares. Travelers may need to bargain. The auto- rickshaws charge almost half price than the taxi drivers, if haggling is done properly. For a unique experience, the travelers can roam around in cycle rickshaws. The fares for the same are expensive these days, but the experience is worth it.
Tourists are not allowed to drive the rented cars all by themselves. A driver has to be hired along with the rented cars. Rented bikes can be used to roam around Thamel and Freak Street. However, the traffic congestion is terrible at major places in Kathmandu.
