Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal and is situated in the heart of Kathmandu valley. This city is like an open museum which showcases several shrines, palaces, temples and pagodas. Durbar Square is one of the major tourist attractions due to its stunning Newari architecture. The Thamel area is another place where most of the travelers halt for accommodation, bookshops, internet cafes, trekking permits and food. Some of the other famous tourist’s attractions include Hanuman Dhoka, Kumari Chowk, Swayambhunath, Bouddhanath Stupa, National Museum and Patan Durbar Square.
Hanuman Dhoka is an old royal palace which was once the residence of royal family of Kathmandu, however at present it is no longer the home to the royal family. This old palace is a building with intricate architecture and ornate courtyards. The Kumari Chowk is the residence of Living Goddess Kumari, with its exquisite carved wooded balconies and window screens, this structure is often visited by all the tourists. Buddha’s eye is painted on all the four sides of Boudhhanath Stupa which dates back to 600 AD. This is also the religious center for most of the Tibetans as it houses hundreds of prayer wheels.
Tourist can enjoy the hilltop setting in Kathmandu where the lovely Swayambhunath temple provides great views of the city and is also the home for boisterous troupe of monkeys. The National Museum of Kathmandu is one of the most important museums in Nepal and houses a wide collection of ancient artifacts, weaponry and works of art. The Patan Durbar Square is situated across the Bagmati River in Kathmandu which is much quieter area and it contains a delightful temple and a richly decorated Royal Palace. This area is also famous for its handcrafts which are made by traditional craftsman.
