History and Background
Maharashtra was ruled by the Satavahana Dynasty in the era between 230 BC and 225 BC. The state saw rich cultural development during this glorious era. Earlier, it was a part of Emperor Ashoka’s Magadha Empire. The third century saw gradual disintegration of Satavahana rule and it was followed by the Islamic rule. The Islamic rule began in the thirteenth century and in the fifteenth century, Maharashtra was ruled by 5 Shahs, namely Nizamshah, Adilshah, Kutubshah, Bidarshah and Imadshah. The Maratha Empire rose in the seventeenth century under the leadership of the great Maratha warrior king, Shivaji Raje Bhosale.

Complete Deccan belonged to the Maratha kingdom by the year 1680, the year of Shivaji’s death. The separate state of Maharashtra was formed in the year 1960.
