History and Background
Rajasthan was part of the Mauryan Empire and a scattered Republic until the arrival of Rajput clans. The state witnessed a medieval struggle for supremacy between Chalukyas, Parmars and Chauhans from 1000-1200 AD. In 1200 AD some parts of Rajasthan saw the emergence of Muslim rulers, who made Nagaur and Ajmer the centers of power. Mewar was the most prominent and powerful state of Rajasthan during the 12th century AD. The dominion of Akbar made Rajasthan politically united.
The Mughal Empire went on a decline after 1707, resulting in the political disintegration of Rajasthan. In 1817 the British made treaties of alliance with most of the states of Rajputana, thus began the British rule of Rajasthan. The present state of Rajasthan was formed after an extensive integration process which finally concluded on November 1, 1956. At present the state has 32 districts, 105 sub divisions, 37889 inhabited village and 222 towns.
