Leh is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Jammu & Kashmir that offers everything from spiritual healing to adventure tourism. It is the headquarters of Ladakh district. Leh is renowned for its serene geographical surroundings, colorful cultural programmes and beautiful villages. This picturesque town offers a variety of options for undertaking adventures amidst the spectacular topography of this region. These adventure sports include trekking, mountaineering, rafting and skiing. The monks in the maroon robes on their way to the monastery, the lilting of mountain music, shepherds trailing behind their herd of sheep are some of the common sights and sounds of Leh Ladakh.
Location
Leh is a hilly terrain bounded by the two of the world’s mightiest mountain ranges, the Great Himalayas in the south and the Karakoram in the north. The main land approach to Ladakh is from the Kashmir Valley through the 434 kms Srinagar-Leh highway. Leh is very famous for its colorful festivals which include the tradional mask and peacock dances that enthrall the festival procession.

The Shanti Stupa is one of the finest monuments in Leh. The monasteries or the Gompas of Ladakh are the most famous repositories of Buddhist religion and culture. Sightseeing of these historic monuments and other major Buddhist Gompas are the main attractions of Leh Ladakh. Leh is also popular for Buddhist fairs and festivals. The biggest and the most famous monastic festivals is that of the Hemis that falls in late June or early July. This particular festival is dedicated to Padmasambhave.
